How would you interpret this parking sign?

What is the name of your state (only U.S. law)? CA

I parked in this zone around 7:30 PM in SF because I couldn't find anywhere else to park. There were several other cars parked in the same zone, and the curb was painted yellow. My buddies insisted that it would be safe, but I was skeptical.

After signing in for work I went back to re-park the car, which was a lot easier after 8:00pm. The other cars were still parked there.

Since you can't possibly park without stopping, I'm gonna go ahead and say you got lucky, but don't try it again as it is all too likely you'll find your vehicle towed next time.

Per CVC 21458(b) the yellow zone is for ...

(2) Yellow indicates stopping only for the purpose of loading or
unloading passengers or freight for the time as may be specified by
local ordinance.​

If you parked, exited and left your car, you would appear to have been in violation. Note that parking, standing, and stopping are generally all inclusive and interchangeable with one another. Unless some other rule or sign was in effect, if you were not actively engaged in loading or unloading, you would appear to have been in violation of the curb marking.

That's a "No Stopping ~ Tow Away Zone", unless you'rre driving a commercial vehicle, then you can load/unload between the hours of 7:00AM to 6:00PM.

So at 7:30PM, ALL vehicles will be towed. You DID get lucky...

I drove by again last night and there was a full row of cars parked in the spot. I'm wondering if it's one of those lost islands in the metropolis where parking is allowed despite clear indications prohibiting it.
