This is the first time I've been in a situation like this but, with a lot of money hinging on the doc's opinion, I wonder why this wouldn't happen now.

No. But I haven't asked. When I was deposed, he mentioned to me he thought the doc would be deposed in a couple of months. But doesn't that need to be requested by the attorney of the defendant? Sounds like I need to follow up.
