What is the name of your state? California.

My wife was offered a plea of 20 days work release instead of going to jail for a case that i have already posted about a month ago. The problem is that they say SHE must PAY them to do unpaid work for them. At $120 a day that factors out to $2,400 which is money that simply does not exist for us. So is that seriously it? Do they ever just let you do work for them without having to pay them if you are below a certain income level?

What work release program is it? SWAP?

I've heard the amount was closer to $20 a day, but bases on income.

Either way, your wife may be "doing work" but in reality, she is still being supervised by "on-site" and record keeping personel. Not to metion, there probably is a liablity on the county should she damage or hurt someone/thing.

If the cost is too high, jail is always an alternative. And....in CA, most jails are so over crowded, your honey may only have to serve a portion of her time. It isn't unusual for those with less that 30 days, to be sent packing the day they remand themselves.

Have your wife call the worker's name that appears on her dept. of revenue bill.I didn't see your earlier post so I'm not sure what the case is concerning or what all her sentencing is.But if she has been given the option to do a work program as an alternative to county jail time, then yes, she has to pay the cost of the program. But she can arrange(usually, depending on the worker)smaller monthly payments.
If she was given probation, then this could be part of the bill that she recieved.
Tell her that I hope that everything works out for her.
