Let me start this by saying I'm one of 3 tenants on a lease in Michigan. We're currently having an issue where one of the tenants is bringing people into our home that neither me or the other tenant involved are comfortable with. People that are constantly drunk, seem high, possibly dangerous, etc. When we confronted her about this all she responded with time and time again is "I'm on the lease, I can do whatever I want and bring whoever I want over." but is this true? Legally can 2 people override her decisions when 3 people are on the lease? What are our options short of breaking the lease and finding somewhere else to live because that isn't an option with our current funds.

For further information they stay late but never sleep here, our lease agreement doesn't state anything about not allowing people who aren't on the lease to stay over anyway. The people being brought in are extremely unpleasant but they've never been outright threatening or violent so we haven't had any opportunity to have them removed for that and while they leave a mess they haven't destroyed anything. They skirt the lines of anything we can think of to have the police brought into things and have them removed.

So does your bedroom door have a deadbolt door lock on it ? If it doesn't ask your LL if you can add one and then ask the LL if you can hire his /her maintenance person to install it OR if you can have written consent to hire a local locksmith to do the job so it will be done nice and neatly. AS far as your lease , there is no so called majority wins thing , If you don't like her visitors then keep your room locked when your asleep or not home and just accept that its one of those things about sharing a place. IF the roommate and her friends begin to use illegal drugs in the home you MUST call the police , your LL cant do squat about it with out a police report in hand! How did you come to end up sharing this place with her ?

There is no legal solution to your problem. Two against one does not lessen or enhance the rights of any individual tenant. As a matter of fact, in her capacity as a tenant she bears no legal responsibility to the other tenants whatsoever. Nor you to her.

Obviously this is a most unpleasant situation, but don't look to the law to compensate for your err in judgment.

Sounds like you and your roommate simply don't like the people your third roommate hangs out with and brings over.

So...these folks are unpleasant, possible drunk, maybe high, somewhat messy but not threatening or violent, don't sleep over and absolutely nothing has happened to either of you while they are there.

Welcome to having roommates. Perhaps the third one doesn't like your friends either.

Legally there is nothing you really can do here since nothing actually has happened regarding this tenants friends.
