I am inquiring on the minnesota state law of abandonment of a vehicle. statute 168b.03

here is what happened.

I was given an 85 ford ranger for free to me, for I needed a vehicle, it was not in the greatest shape but got me from point a to b. I had to go and pick up my car from St. Louis, and so I went to budget rental to get a car, I asked where to park my vehicle, and they said in the parking lot in the back, can park as long as I want to.

There were a few parking lots in the back, so I parked in one, it was the HOME (dept store) parking lot. Well, I left the truck there for approx 2 1/2-3 weeks.

When I finally had someone to help me get the truck, I went to get it, and it was gone...then I had to go up north to my families for a week. When I got back on a friday...I had a certified letter. It was dated the 2nd, and that my car has been impounded as of the 23rd, and with charges and $20 a day for storage fees, I owe as of today 527 dollars. I ahve to pay in cash to get the vehicle out. I jsut got out of military, and only have temp job, trying to get money to bring my wife over here from germany...and I really cannot afford this. Is there any loopholes?

The only one that I seen, was something that a peace officer had to contact me within 10 days of impoundment...it was 11 when I recieved the registered slip..so I dunno if that will work.

please, I need help...I only make 1200 a month, and with bills, rent (350), and starting college next month, I really cannot afford this.

any suggestions?

please e-mail with reply as soon as possible.

thx

I am a law school graduate. What I offer is mere information, not to be construed as forming an attorney client relationship.

Well, the 10 day impoundment thing may work. But, you DID leave it there all that time without really making sure it was okay to do so.

I think you may qualify for legal aid. Contact your county legal aid foundation and ask for an attorney to help you contact the proper authorities and/or write a letter on your behalf.
