what does it me to be a joint sponsor? being in the military would you think it would be wise for me to sponsor a family of five. Four of them are children and I am only related to one of them.

It means that at any time over the next 10 years any of them claim gov or state aid, that you will be liable for possibly paying the money back to the state.
