Adoption Question

(Michigan) My nephew has been with me since he was 2 days old and he is now 5mths old. He was placed with me by the DHS department. The Father and mother have ask me if I would adopt the child. I have already had my adoption home study and waiting for my Foster Care lisence. What do I need to do. Should I hire an Attorney or does the childs attorney take care of the legal stuff. Any thing I should prepare for?

Yes, please!!! Find an experienced adoption attorney to guide your through the process.

Adoption--even one with both parents full support and consent, is never a DIY porject. (Even if you think it's "too expensive"--far mor expensive to try and fix errors later or wind up with a child ripped from your arms/home.)

It is ALWAYS best for the two parties to have their own attorney's. It will not be as expensive as you think being that both mother and father are signing over their rights, but there are many little legalities that need to be addressed and you need someone (lawyer) that will look out for your best interest.

how long

In Michigan how long wil it take to finalize the adoption? we will have had the child in our home over 6 mths when we go to court and the parents sign off on him.

That would be a question for the lawyer. But I wouldn't expect it to happen very quickly and the parents WILL be given the opportunity to change their minds.
