What is the name of your state (only U.S. law)? California

I have a 3 month old son who I cannot take care of so I want to give him to a family who wants to adopt him. His father is rarely in the picture and doesn't pay any child support or anything. Would I still have to get a court order to let my son be adopted? His father isn't on the birth certificate and hasn't asked to see him in over 2 weeks.

You will have to notify the father and he will have the right to object.

You really need an attorney to handle this.
