I have full custody of a 13, 16, & 17 year old. We live in the state of Alabama. The biological father has regular visitation but has not made any contact with the girls since August, 2000. My new husband would like to adopt the girls. Is this possible? Can the girls change their last name at any time?

Well, if the 17 year old turns of age and is no longer a minor, your husband can adopt her in an adult adoption. These are fairly simple. Check with a local family law attorney on what exactly is needed.

As for the other two: cannot change their names or have your husband adopt them unless one of two things happen: real father terminates his parental rights in a court of law or a court of law deems the father as abandoning his children.
