I am thinking of giving my son up for adoption to my father. My son has lived with my father since he was 1. He is now 10 almost 11 and he knows who I am, but he is very happy with my father. What would we have to do to have the adoption go through? The father is unknown. Would we be able to just sign a notorized document filed with the court? or would we actually have to go to court?

I am a law school graduate, What I offer is mere information, not to be construed as forming an attorney client relationship.

You don't mention your state, so I cannot give you the exact procedure or law. But you do need to go to court and go through the whole process because your child is a minor. In other words, signing an agreement is usually only valid in some state for adult adoptions, not adoptions of minor children within the family.
