What is the name of your state (only U.S. law)? LA

In the case of an adult adoption do the adopting parents HAVE to be married?

this is undoing a step parent adoption, and the adoptee in question would like to have real father and real mother back on her Birth certificate. Mom is still there but not her real father.

However mom and dad were never married and are both currently married to other people.

I don't believe they have to be if all the parties are in agreement when it's an adult adoption.

But is it really worth all the trouble just to change the birth certificate?

it is to the child.

My point is that they could be spending a good bit of money on something that when it really doesn't mean anything.

If it were me, I'd rather spend the money taking the parents out for a nice dinner or play or something than throwing it away on attorneys.

I know but the child was mentally and physically abused by her adoptive dad, and for her she feels she needs to do this to close that chapter in her life.

There are other ways to get closure. Therapy is generally cheaper than lawyers. Likely to be more effective too. What if it was her biological father that abused her? What would she do then?
