I live in California. When I got divorced I had custody of our two sons and my wife was pregnant but not by me. After the birth she left him with me and I have raised him as my own and he is now 18. I tried to adopt when he was 8 but his mom refused. My wife and I still want to adopt him, do we still need a lawyer to adopt or can I do it on my own? What is the approximate cost?

I don't know the answers you are looking for, but WOW!!! You must be a wonderful person (as well as your wife) to love this child so completely and selflessly. This world needs more parents like you, instead of all the fathers who are trying to get out of paying child support.

I do have a question... was the baby born before or after the divorce? If he was born before the divorce was final, he would be considered a child of the marriage and already be legally yours.

Thanks Kellie. We were divorced already, my divorce was final in Oct. and he was born in January.
