I currently live in AZ and my Daddy {stepfather} and his wife {my biological mother} live in WA state. My biological father also lives in WA state. I am 36yrs old and I want to legally be my Daddy's daughter. He raised me with my biological mother since I was about 9months old.

I don't just want his "name", I want to BE HIS DAUGHTER. He attempted to adopt me as a child but my biological father denied the petition. I want to know... what steps do I have to take to do this? Can I file this without a lawyer? Is this allowed in these states {I have found conflicting information online in regards to this}? Where do I find the forms to do this? and how much is it going to cost us?

Yes, I know that a "name change" is probably cheaper but no, it's not the same. He's my Daddy, and I want to say as much to him and the world.

Blessings and Thank you,

I would suggest that you consult an attorney. One of the potential problems is if your stepfather adopts you as an adult, it may remove your mother as your mother. Therefore, if its to be done, it has to be thoroughly researched first.

This is not legal advice, but if you think that the piece of paper changes anything, then your relationship isn't what you think it is.

Since you're already calling him 'daddy', then the world presumably thinks he is. The piece of paper won't change anything.

The rest can be handled with a will and advance directive.

What are you talking about LD? This is a step parent adoption. Mom will still be mom.

My neice did this when she was 18.

Not all states see it that way when its an adult adoption. Some states don't even allow adult adoptions (unless there have been any changes since 10-12 years ago).

That's why its best to research it with an adoption attorney, just to be certain that there will not be any issues. It may be perfectly fine and treated as a stepparent adoption, but its really best to make sure ahead of time.

Plus, its important to research the law not only in the state where the adoption is taking place, but also in the state where the person was born.
Several people I knew did adult adoptions in the pre-Troxel years because in some states that actually helped. In one case there appeared to be no problem at all with the adoption, but when they applied for the new birth certificate from the state where the adult was born, that state considered it a single parent adoption and removed the other parent.

They even took it to court and to appeal in that state, and nothing could be done.

Yes, an adult can be adopted by the stepparent in WA State. This will not remove the other natural parent (Mom in this case) from the birth certificate nor will it remove Mom's rights.

Mom and her husband would be the legal parents of the OP.
