How would adult females go about legally becoming sisters when not blood-relatives? Would there be a form of adoption for this, or could we draw up a document and have it notarized?

You can pick your friends, but you can't pick your relatives

Maybe one of your sets of parents could allow the other's parents to adopt their "child"--otherwise, I'm afraid you'll just have to pretend.

Would there be some advantage to this sisterhood that isn't available in a friendship?

To answer your question - Yes, we want it. We want it legal because family members have greater access and rights say towards certain areas then by law. For instance, my friend wants me to be her daughter's guardian should something happen to her. Her family would undoubtedly protest this. And beyond that, like I said, we want this. WHY DO PEOPLE GET MARRIED? Does it serve some purpose beyond that of love and commitment? That is just a piece of paper stating long-term relationship.
