I cosigned for someone’s apartment lease almost two years ago. It was a 1-year lease and she has since then, signed a new lease at the same complex. This second lease runs out in January.

Since I didn’t sign the second lease, am I still a cosigner? I received a late payment notice and am wondering if I’m really still an obligor, or just still in the roll-a-dex?

The rent has been paid, I’m just wondering. I don’t want to alert the housing manager yet.

Did she SIGN a new lease or did it automatically renew for another year?

She signed the new lease.

If I’m technically off the hook anyway, I’d rather NOT alert the manager. She’ll be able to sign the third lease without me. A bit sketchy yes, but if the housing manager doesn’t know better…

Just at some point, I’d like to severe my legal/financial ties.

Thanks for your quick replies

If you don't want to talk to the manager, then you're taking your chances. Wouldn't it be better to know for sure?

And if you are not still a co-signer, they can't make you become one again. It would be your choice if you wanted to continue to be legally/financially involved.

**A: I am not positive that you are off the hook.

Nope,

It turns out that the “lease” she signed was only an intent to renew. So I’m pretty sure I’m still a cosigner.

Time for us to call the housing manager if I want out.

I do know that this obligation is not on my credit report. I would sooner pay the rent than ever let my credit get dinged. We wrote in a clause stating I could only be held accountable for two months worth of rent and not any of the fees that could pile on.

Thank you all
