Dear Mr. Fitzsimmons:

You recently submitted an application for employment with American Airlines as a flight officer and pilot candidate. We appreciate your interest. However, for reasons we will explain, we will be returning your application fee. Consistent with our safety policy of training pilots for service as American captains, we cannot consider you for employment as a flight officer at this time.

As you may be aware from several publicized court decisions, American has a policy of hiring only flight officers who can reasonably expect to serve as Captains for a period of time before they are required to retire at age 60 by FAA regulations. As approved by those courts, when hiring pilots, American reviews its fleet plans, anticipated retirements and attrition, projections for route expansion and related factors as governed by the collective bargaining between American and the Allied Pilots Association, to determine how long it will take an entry level first officer to be able to rise to Captain. We have a related policy that requires every pilot to progress to the next level as opportunities arise. Unfortunately, at this time we have concluded that you will not be able to advance to serve as a Captain prior to FAA mandatory retirement. We believe that this policy contributes significantly to the enhancement of our safety record.

Because we are unable to consider your application we will be returning your $100 application fee. You should be receiving a check via mail within 60 days.

I personally wish you the best in your flying career wherever that me be.
