My wife and I are going to be divorced this year. We were married for 5 years, have no children and no property in common.

I make approximately $80K/year and she has her own business, which she owned and operated prior to our marriage.

She tells me her attorney has advised her to seek $2,000/month for spousal support. This sounds awfully high to me, considering the amount of time we were married.

Is this possible?

Thank you for your response.

My response:

Yes, it's possible, but unlikely. As in any negotiation, numbers are thrown around and somewhere in the middle a settlement will be agreed upon. Usually in cases like this, I get the parties to agree to about $1,000 / month and, for such a short-term marriage, to be paid for no more than 1 year.
