What is the name of your state (only U.S. law)? Co.

My stepsom just asked this question for his girl friend.
They have no computer.

Her grandparent left her money in a will.
Girlfriend is 30 years old.
Father of the girlfriend is the one in charge to see fit when he thinks she can get the money.
She wants them. She doesnt know what to do.

She really needs them. Thanks so I can call them.

She needs to take her paperwork to an attorney.

Then she needs to take HERSELF to an attorney. He/she will be able to look up the details of what happened in probate court.

Understand that what the will says is NOT the only factor in whether one recieves an inheritance. It is also important to know what debts against the estate existed. If the decedent was in long term care they could have used up all the estate assets. Also, if assets were held in such a way that they did not pass through probate, there may not have been enough assets in the estate to pay out what was willed. I see estates that are virtually insolvent by the time the party has passed all the time - the will awards money the person no longer has at death.

And if the son (her father) was Payer On Death (POD) on his father's accounts, the money in those accounts went directly to him. There may have been no money left to be distributed by a will, or no money left after the estate was settled and funeral and other final expenses were paid. If she truly believes there is money that was in grandpa's estate that she should get that she isn't getting, and her father will not give her any information about it at all, she can of course, hire an attorney to get the will and pursue the case. But she should be very sure that there's something there to get.

Thank you for your replies.

Grandparent died years ago. And there was/are a lot of money. All according to her father.

Father will not let her see the will or have any money.
But that there is a lot of money for her when he feels like she can have it.
she just did not know where to start.
I will let her know about all your answers.

She can access the probate file in the county courthouse probate dept. Dad having money does not mean the estate had the money. He could have his own, or have been a co owner on accounts.
