The school in which I teach, in Nassau County on Long Island in New York, received a letter from Yvonne Brady, Project Director of the Anti-Defamation League. It said, "Crosses, creches, and menorahs,....may not be used as decorations"....in the schools.

Who are they?
How do they come to dictate what a school does in this matter?
and, do I have any civil rights as a Christian who believes in "inclusion" instead of religious nihilism?

Thank you.

sure you have rights -- we all have rights.

"we all" includes atheists, jews, buddhists, muslims, practicioners of shinto and wiccan, dervishes, silent meditationers, yogis, etc.

so, perhaps you want to help organize a fast for the month of ramadan to help teach religious tolerance in your school? or, do YOU want to dictate the images, songs, and celebrations that every child will participate in?

how little faith do you have to believe your faith is threatened by the law (the constitution) that prohibits public schools from indoctrinating any particular religion?

if you want to know about the anti-defamation league's position on religion in the schools, go to their site: http://www.adl.org/frames/front_faith_freedom.html
that is, if you want to think...

Lawguy.

Why so hostile? I asked 3 questions and you smart answered one. IF you are such an expert on constitutional law, answer the other two. Otherwise, get off the air.

well doctor phd,

the "hostility" in my message is my reaction to the "victimization" in your message. ohh, poor little christian victims, can't promote good old christmas virtues without some "nihilist" shoving their disbelief down your throat...

that's the choice?? "inclusion" or "nihilism"?

1. Who are they?
i guess you got the answer to this question.

2. How do they come to dictate what a school does in this matter?
i guess you didn't get this answer: they don't dictate, the constitution dictates (as interpreted by the courts) and it says there shall be no entaglement of church and state. this is construed to mean that state funded systems of indoctrination (i.e., the public schools) can't appear to support/suggest/promote one religious viewpoint or the other. so, as you were advised, no nativity scene, cross, nor menorah...

3. and, do I have any civil rights as a Christian who believes in "inclusion" instead of religious nihilism?
whaddayah want? sure, like i said, you've got civil rights...

Dear Lawguy:

Please take another course in law and reading people. I did not feel victimized. I wondered? questioned? was curious? if B'nai Brith spoke for the entire constitutional United States or not. I can handle it, if it does. I see nothing wrong in questioning people who "speak ex-cathedra" a legal term meaning "from the pulpit."

To date, you still have not quoted the law, just your venom.

Two, it is very clear that your type of unchallenged diatribe has played out well in bars. I suggest some therapy or AA. Your understanding of the law, constitutional to be specific, does not play as well as your anger.

I was under the impression that I could get a definitive answer to a legal question on this website, so that I was sure it was all under the constitution. I do not answer to B'nai B'rith. I do not know for whom they speak. I don't think it is unwise to question people who come forward and make rules. I don't need to fast for a month-- which is a religious practice-- to find out if I can display a menorrah, which is a religious symbol, to satisfy your sophomoric idea of mixing the two.

I will go further, as you have clearly lost any legal mentality you might have ever had.

Don't bother to answer. I guess I am on the wrong Board. This should be entitled, "Abusive Men,dot com." Good luck in recovery. I will take my matter up with legal counsel, not a drunk.
