I dont think it will work if you are talking about a real old car as the carfax site will only accept 17 character vins and when i tried my 68 cutlass it would not work, not enough vin charecters in my vin. at least i think i was on carfax maybe it was another site? good luck.

Have you thought about using a stick with a rubber-coated magnet on the end? You're bound to get some hits with that method.
