U.S. Marshals apprehended Schrenker late Tuesday at a northern Florida campground two days after the amateur daredevil pilot apparently tried to fake his own death in a plane crash. Authorities believe he parachuted to the ground and later sped off on a red motorcycle he had stashed in central Alabama.

Did you even READ the link you provided? He tried to fake his own death...

You can be chargd with a variety of offenses, including reckless endangerment and manslaughter. Its the same as is he jumped out of a moving car on the freeway. By letting the plane keep flying with no pilot he endangered the lives of everyone in the path of that plane.

he hasn't been charged with reckless endangerment and manslaughter. he's been charged with wrecking his own plane.
That's like saying, if i run over my nike shoes on the road the police will arrest me for wrecking my nike sports shoes.

He faked a distress call, caused state and federal resources (including the Coast Guard) to be diverted for his "rescue", and intentionally crashed his aircraft in an attempt to commit fraud and avoid justice. I can't say what the official charges charges were, but here is a quote from one story:

"Scott Wilson, a spokesman for the U.S. Marshals Northern District of Florida, said Schrenker was charged with intentionally wrecking his aircraft and faking a distress call, causing the Coast Guard to launch a search to save his life when it wasn't necessary."

No, you can't just crash your property, tie up resources, leave debris all over the place, and commit fraud with impunity.

The two federal charges he is facing are 14 USC 88(c) (faking distress call) and 118 USC 32 (a) (1) :

(a) Whoever willfully—
(1) sets fire to, damages, destroys, disables, or wrecks any aircraft in the special aircraft jurisdiction of the United States or any civil aircraft used, operated, or employed in interstate, overseas, or foreign air commerce;
shall be fined under this title or imprisoned not more than twenty years or both.

How many people can be killed by running over your own shoes? None. How many people can be killed by an airplane falling out of the sky? Your anology are not comparable, it's like comparing a water balloon to a bomb.

Civil aviation is federally regualted.

You can not intentionally crash a plane and be within the law.

Good catch! I searched for that last night and couldn't find the federal charges (plenty on his state charges for his fraud, but none for the federal offenses).
