What is the name of your state? VT
My mother in law was given less that six months to live and she may need to go to a respite house were people live out there last few months. She is disabled and is on disability, She has no funds, no bank account. She is on medicare allso. If I am the power of attorney will they make me pay her expenses at the respite house, I know if I am not her power of attorney the state of Vermont will pick up the bill due to her income.

Sorry about your mother-in-law. Do you mean Respice or Respite? To further assist you, more info is required.

1. Is your MIL competent to make decisions regarding handling her affairs and medical decisions? Does she have any dementia?
2. Is your MIL incapable of performing 2 or more daily activities of life (i.e. dressing herself, hygiene, showering/bathing, using the bathroom by herself, making meals, etc.)?
3. Is your MIL enrolled in Hospice?
4. Is your MIL still at home? If not, where is she and can she stay where she is with the assistance of Hospice?
5. Does your MIL have Advanced Health Care Directives that includes someone designated as a POA for health care?
6. Does anyone in the family have a Durable POA your MIL's financial/estate affairs?
7. Does your MIL own any property?
8. Does your MIL have any other medical insurance other than Medicare (i.e. A Medigap Policy or a Medicare HMO Plan?)
9. Have you signed anything for your MIL that would make you a guarantor?
