What is the name of your state (only U.S. law)? Washington. I have been training my own assistance dog for almost 20 years now. Two different dogs and now i need a new one. I am trying to figure out what the laws concerning this is. MY land lord is telling me washington state no longer allows a disabled person to train their own dog. And that i need certification for a fully trained dog. She claims i am not allowed a larger dog. That they must be under 30 pounds. I told her These statements were not true. I tried to tell her the law but she refused. Now i am loosing the dog that i had picked out because of this and her refusing to allow the dog in the apartment. It is so important to have the puppy as soon as possible before 8 weeks if not you need to get them socialized in the weeks after you get the puppy due to the issues with fear or aggression towards children or other people. So this chance is lost for this litter. what is the washington law pertaining to assistance dog training and training my own dog? Where can i get a hard copy of the law so i can show here. She says because it is not public housing the law changes. I told her it does not. So there is a difference of opinion here.

Go to your doctor. Get it in writing from your doctor that you do, indeed need a service dog. Washington state does have registry, but this is not required. The lesser ADA laws from the FEDERAL requirements are what your landlord has to accept. And YES, you can train your own service dog. Whatever weight the dog is cannot be dictated by your landlord.

My dog has to be tall enough to catch me when I lose equilibrium. I don't know your needs, and they don't really matter. I trained her myself.

The entire key is getting a statement from your doctor saying that you do, indeed, need a service dog. Then the landlord has nothing more to say. At least according to federal guidelines.

federal law

Federal law allows for private training
• No note from your doctor is going to help until you end up in court
• In order to properly train your own dog you need to be aware of state laws covering "dogs in training". The rules for dogs in training are different than for working service dogs.
• Dogs in training are NOT covered under federal law (the Americans with Disabilities Act) and rules will vary state to state
Last I was able to check under Washington State - training was not mentioned in their state law - you could see if there are updates to titles 70 or 49 on this
The license fee will be waived for your working service dog but not for your "pup in training"
• The dog in training - can be challenged by places as it has no protection in Washington State.
Other states offer some access rights to pups in training - restrictions do apply.
• Some require the pups to be dressed in capes or backpacks with ID on them.
• Others require a professional trainer must be with the animal in training when the animal is in public.
It is very hard to prepare a privately trained dog for public access in service work because of the laws around them
