What is the name of your state? What is the name of your state? Ohio

While looking for new employment, I was asked to submit to a Background Check. No problem to me, or so I thought. It came back "red". I called the company performing the check and they cannot verify my employer from the mid 1990's. Here is what went on, explaining it to them helped none.

Went to work for Company A, six months after I hired on Company B bought a number of Company A stores (mine included). One more year later, Company A bought out all of Company B's stores and changed the name to their own... Company B went out of business.

They wanted me to submit Tax records proving my employment. I had a house fire - total loss of all my possessions, including tax documents, about 7 years ago. I didn't get the job b/c I did not have the proof.

How can I rectify this problem as most of the jobs I apply for are requesting Background Checks? I don't want to keep running in to this problem.

1 more question - my ex-wife filed bogus domestic violence charges against me during our divorce when she discovered she was losing custody of our kids to me. I brought evidence (taped phone conversations) to court and it proved she and her boyfriend were lying to the court, my attorney stated this judge was hard and wouldn't totally dismiss the case. He would however, probably reduce the charge to a misdemeanor disorderly conduct charge, which is exactly what he did. Totally frustrated me, but it was better than falsely being charged with the other. How will this charge affect these Background checks???

Is there anyone you worked with back then that can verify your employment? A former supervisor would be ideal. If the company is now out of business and you have no tax records from those years, that's all I can think of.

How will this charge affect these Background checks??? It's going to show up if they do a criminal check, if that's your question. What you need to do is prepare the employer for what the report is going to show and briefly explain the circumstances. (And I do mean briefly. You do not want to go into any more detail than you absolutely need to regarding any past ugliness your personal life.)

Thanks Beth

This is a totally new issue compounding the present issue I am under at work. I did not expect it and it felt like another blow.

I just may know someone and how to contact them, they weren't my supervisor though.

Is there any way to obtain past tax records that you know of?

Is there any way to obtain past tax records that you know of? Ya got me. :) My area of exertise is employment law.

You might want to post that question on the Tax board here as well as give your State's IRS a call. I think the statue of limitations for auditing tax records is three years (don't quote me on that) so I rather doubt the State or feds are going to have copies any longer either. But it's worth a try.
