We live in New York. My husband received a summons & complaint yesterday from the nursing home his mother resided in New York from April 2000- July 2000. She was entitled to medicare and private insurance which paid most of the bill. His mom died Dec. 2000. There was an outstanding bill due, which we disputed (unfortunately verbally) due to the loss of her $1,800 hearing aid. They advised they would look into, then we received the complaint. My husband did not sign any contract with the nursing home, however the suit alleges fraudulent transfer of assets which is completely false. ln fact, we have a checking account with her name still on it along with her husband who is still alive. Can they make my husband responsible for this debt and what is our recourse? Thanks so much in advance for any help.

If process served on you on 4/28/02, you have either 20 or 30 days to answer (Answer is a formal legal document, prepared by counsel). Do not ignore the papers, or you'll suffer a default jt.
