BK advertising that bugs me....

What is the name of your state? Indiana

For the past 5 or more years an attorney from a neighboring state has a TV advertisement that goes" Thinking of filing Bankruptcy ??? DO IT NOW...Credit card companys are lobbying to change the law, file before it is too late !" What disturbs me is they have been advertising this for at least 5 years with the intent of instilling fear and a sense of urgency about DOING IT NOW.

Understand I truly believe some people need to file bankruptcy, I don't believe that one should have to give up living just because they have debt, money is not the beginning and end of life! But BK is something you really need to weigh, Trying to frighten people into making this decision is unethical.

I recently heard a young person at work talk about filing bankruptcy because she owed 2,000 in credit cards. She said she'd seen this commercial where they were saying ' DO IT NOW" I took the time to ask a few questions about her situation and explained how unnecessary bk would be.

whew... I'm glad I got that out !

I would have to agree with you. Once lawyers were allowed to advertise that way, well.. it opened the door for this kind of thing.
While they've been trying to cram thru this horrible bankruptcy reform bill, it is closer to passage now that its been passed by the House and in up to the Senate. Hopefully they will KILL IT once again, as its a horrid, horrid bill that will hurt a lot more people than it will help. While I agree that SOME reform needs to happen, it shouldn't be this bill. Even lawyers who practice could be seriously impacted if the bill goes thru as it is. If it did, there could be a LOT of BK lawyers who stop doing BK's altogether, further hurting the public.
