What is the name of your state? Massachusetts

Many employees (including myself) at my company are getting their paychecks late; and some have even bounced. The owner always replaces the bounced checks including fees. Although some of the replacements had bounced. He blames the problems on the postal service, the bank, the payroll company or me. The company is out of CT. We have employees and independent contractors in 7 states. This has been going on for almost 6 months. What kind of trouble is he getting himself into? What recourse do the employees have?

Employees have the recourse of filing a complaint with the state DOL in whatever state they are working in. The DOL(s) will take action if the employer is found to be in violation of state wage laws.

Independent contractors will need to file suit for any unpaid wages or bounced checks. Note that this may not be worth their while if the employer has made good on any bounced checks and related fees.

It is also unlawful to issue worthless checks. If you want to go this route, you can also file a complaint with the police.
