Our son was adopted 9 years ago and the court changed his name and sealed the record. Our son is mine by birth and adopted by my husband. My husband is in the military and since this adoption we have at different times recieved benefits explanations with the old name, been told that our son could only recieve medical treatment under the old name, and the latest is that my husband must now provide CUSTODY PAPERS for housing purposes. Thru out all of this we have tried to address this issue time and again with someone always telling us that "it is taken care of". Needless to say we are a little tired of this after 9 years and we are wondering if there is any legal recourse?
The adoption and sealing of the records was done in SC but we currently reside in VA.
Thanks in Advance

I am a law school graduate. What I offer is mere information, not to be construed as forming an attorney client relationship.

Since files were sealed, it may be a bit difficult to get certification of all pertinent paperwork on your own. Hire a family law attorney to see if he can subpoena the work for the military's files, etc.

Try http://www.attorneypages (many offer free consultations) or try the Virginia/South Carolina State bar associations
