I'm not sure if this the right forum to post this issue. Kindly advice.
Dear All,
About 1 1/2 yr ago, our company ( private company ) was looking for a IT consultant. I found one suitable candidate from a consulting company I knew. The candidate was very well qualified and I selected him. The consulting company offered me commission for selecting him through the term of his contract. It was all verbal no written contracts. At times when they were late on making payments, I sent them an email reminding them. Now they have sent a lawyer's notice saying that I'm committing a crime under TX 32.43 (COMMERCIAL BRIBERY) penal code and that I have to pay back everything they gave me. They were the ones to offer me in the first place and I was guilty of accepting it. Aren't they equally guilty of offering me the payment in the first place. Are they trying to put fear in me? My employer is not aware of this so far. They offer this kind of payments to many other people ( different companies ) as well. What are my options? Going forward I’ve refused to accept any payments.

Regards,
*T*
