Building New Fence

What is the name of your state? Texas.

I live on acreage in East Texas which I initially purchased over 20 yrs ago out of a new survey of previous timber company land. Mine was the first cut, and everything else is cut from those boundries.

I also run a state certified pistol range for qualifying purpose only (not open to general public) on the property, which has been certified over 10 yrs.(before others began moving close by). Continual updates have been and will continue to be made (as time and finances provide) to increase safety and lessen noise.

I have been thinking of establishing definitive boundries (fence) around the property to keep 'wanderers' off/out and away from range (a few have 'wandered' onto property during qualifying).

Recently, as I was investigating downed trees from the hurricane (Rita), I found that neighbor on one side of property had felled some of his pine trees onto my property and discarded limbs from his damage onto my property. This suprred me to be more aggressive in establishing definitive boundries. As I was looking for property corners and lines ( had been many years since original and subsequent surveys and/or my own keeping lines clear), the neighbor on the other side of the property (whom I had never seen....only heard) saw me close to his property and began hurling obscenities and turned two dogs loose. After his threats of violence, I assured him I had no interest in his property.

The next day, I went to surveyor's and ordered a new survey, and went to the Sheriff's Dept. to make them aware of the potential problem.

The survey has now been completed, corners and lines clearly established.

I am about to build fence.

I know, this is a lot of info for a small question, but this is a very important issue to me.

My question is this:
In building the fence, is there a specific distance I should build the fence off the property line proper?
In the past, I had always built fence about 6" back onto my own property.

Legally, no.

Realistically? Just far enough inside your property line so that the installers do not trespass on the neighboring property.

If you, for example, use half-rounds and three-plank fencing, then about 6 inches. If using barbed wire then 1 inch should do it.

Thank you, "BelizeBreeze" for your prompt reply, as I hope to begin work on the fence very soon. As I shall be the installer, I have every intention of not allowing to 'trespass' on anyone's property.

As it is, I have 'retreated' about as far as I feel reasonably acceptable by encroachment and threats (not to mention the intentional release of two pit-bulls by a significantly irrational 'neighbor').

Taking into consideration that I hold myself with some responsibility in others moving down into the area (even the knotheads, as I no control over that), since it was, indeed, I who had electricity and running water brought in.

**A: you are getting a current boundary survey by a licensed surveyor correct?

I am currently doing more clearing on the survey, and checking their work (with my own equipment....I have done surveying, but 'needed' the official version). I have talked today with the property owner who felled the trees on my property and resolved that conflict.

That just leaves the threat, who I have little expectation in reasonable resolution with them.

It has been my intention to attempt to cover those who can't read, or comprehend what they might read (even under duress/stress/etc.), those who might be color blind and/or those who might be legally blind, or who may 'just not know'. 'Fence' is the one most overall, universally understood boundary, though, I shall be accomodating the color purple, as well as reasonably spaced written notification.
