I'm not sure what forum to post this in so I put it here (mods can move it if necessary).

Someone called CPS on my upstairs neighbors last month. They are convinced for some reason that it was me even though I barely know these people and have never had any interaction with them beyond saying hello in the elevator. I know that I didn't make the call. They are currently threatening to sue me for harassment. As of now they haven't actually taken any legal action but they have been distributing letters to all of the occupants in the building I live in (and hanging signs in the common areas) detailing how I have caused them mental and emotional stress by making a fake call to CPS.

I know that calls to CPS are supposed to be anonymous/protected. I'd like to know if anyone knows what I would need to do to get proof that I did not make the call just in case my neighbors do take me to court.

Your neighbors are idiots. Don't give them the time of day. I would ignore them. However, if they begin to harrass you, you should call the police.

Tigi is correct.

It's also impossible to do what you're asking - CPS will not release the records and if the call was anonymous, you can't prove a negative anyway.

I would ignore them, but I would also have my attorney send them a strongly worded letter stating that if they continue to slander me that they'll find themselves facing civil charges for slander. That should shut them up.

I'm going to offer a different approach. If they say anything to you, let 'em have it. Call them every name in the book, insult their questionable parentage, their parenting skills, hell even insult their kid if you have to. The preferable outcome would be that they are in tears apologizing to you. At the very least they should be so shocked about your outburst that they will strongly reconsider their antics.
