CA - Questions About a Lien Against Me

What is the name of your state? I live in California. When running my credit history, I noticed that there is a Tax Lien that has been placed against me for $4,452 as April 2007. From what I understand about liens, a lien has to be cleared when the property is sold; hence, this amount will be deducted from the selling value and given to the plaintiff. However, the question that I have is whether there is any interest on the lien itself. In my case, I know that this lien has been on my property for little over a year. Is there any interest that is attached to this sum of $4,452? If there is, how/where can I find this information? Please don't hesitate to ask me if you need any more details.What is the name of your state?
 


Yes, interest will continue to accrue.

You'll need to go the county courthouse (same place you'll be on the judgment) and pull the file from the real property records to see who has placed the lien.

I invariably agree with TP on substantive matters. This is just a difference in procedure and geography. If the lien involves a tax matter, it didn’t need to go through the court system. I’d start researching the property lien at your County Recorder’s Office. Once you determine what taxing authority originated it, you’ll be able to determine how the interest accrual will work.

Chien, can a tax lien in California be placed without a judgment being obtained in a court? I'm more familiar with a process by which the local or state taxing authority has to get a judgment before placing a lien in the real property records. I do recall the IRS can file a notice of lien without a court proceeding.
