We have had an issue with constant inspections that has become increasingly intrusive over the last year. Every year our landlords require "inspections" to check for issues like electrical repairs or plumbing that may need to be addressed. They have no real reason to believe any issues exist until the tenant informs them of such issues.
This year, the "inspections" continued for almost 2 months for all tenants. We would walk out the door in the morning and there would be notices that the inspections would start that day through the week. They never contacted us to set an appointment and state they'll be coming in sometime during the week. On some of the notices they said that it was for their lenders to look around. Fine, but no set appointments, and how many times in 2 months can the lenders need to look around? Half way through this time period, the notices did come more than 24 hours in advance, but we understood that we would have to arrange a mutually agreed upon time for these inspections.
In one week, a lady came through with a maintenance guy and they took notes and left. Shortly thereafter they notified us that at some time people would come in to fix what was deemed to be a toilet and shower plumbing issue, and to fix some doors that didnt close properly. They also noted that there was a headboard that was obstructing a bedroom window by more than six inches, which is not true at all.
My roommate said that when the guys came to fix the plumbing, he also requested to look in the bedroom to inspect the "headboard" issue. My roommate was told by the "maintenance" person that the headboard was fine and there was no way it six inches into the window. Why was this maintenance person snooping about regarding a headboard issue? Who are these people? Also they are angry because a DirecTV cable is running along the inside patio door to the TV along the wall. IN response to the headboard issue and DirecTV wire, we were informed that we must fix these issues asap as they are coming in tomorrow "sometime" to re-inspect to make sure these safety issues are corrected. SO again they are coming into this apartment.
We spoke to CA Consumer Affairs and the Orange County Housing Authority and they stated it sounds like they are breaking the law and taking advantage of the tenants.
We understand that we must talk to the management ofc about our concerns in person - this is being done tonight by my roommate as he is less intimidated. If they don't stop this, we were told to advise them in writing with a formal demand to stop and follow the laws of our state. If not, we can seek legal council. Does this sound like they are breaking laws and that we have an issue here?
