What is the name of your state (only U.S. law)? CALIFORNIA

Hi - I live in CA state. I have 8 security cameras around house. The camera software allows to put "black" patches that "censors" private areas, which I can neither see nor record. Hence I placed these censor boxes wherever there were neighbor's windows and entire backyard area of neighbor's homes. I do not want to invade their privacy.

My Camera in front of home captures peoples front yards and front patio areas, which are visible to anyone from road or from their respective homes. However, there is one neighbor on the side, who is feeling that the camera, that captures his front lawn and front patio is invasion of privacy. He feels I try to be nosey with who comes to his house or not. He is basically doing this to harass me as we have figured out an illegal cooking business being run from his home. [to clarify - it is illegal to record sound (not vision) without consent, in CA state. the cameras record video only]

I have a diagram that I drew and saved as jpeg image, but there is no way to upload it here. The home is on side of my home, and I as well as other people across the road can see his patio and who enters the home. But we cannot see inside the home at all.

Can you please advise if this is okay per California law?

Regards,

Regards,

Generally, it is not illegal to use surveillance cameras for home security purposes if the cameras do not capture private areas (inside neighboring homes) and if what is captured on film can be seen from a public vantage point with the naked eye (no trespassing, no zoom lenses).

That said, you have already been warned that your neighbors are considering a lawsuit. I fear your installation of cameras that show your neighbor's yard might look like stalking and harassment.

I suggest you consult with an attorney in your area for a personal review of the attorney letter you received and all that you have done in your quest to prevent your neighbor from what you suspect is a commercial cooking operation out of his home.

These latest questions would have been better added to your other thread. A link to that thread: https://forum.freeadvice.com/neighb...ssible-encroachment-rude-neighbor-633866.html
