What is the name of your state?CA-I (step mother) provide medical/dental insurance for my step children and childrens mother provides medical/dental insurance for my step children as well (Court ordered that we both carry insurance). Hers is an HMO and mine is a PPO. Mother took her daughter (my step daughter) to get wisdom teeth pulled. Daughter told us that the cost was going to be $1500. If she goes thru her insurance and gets a portion paid can we have dentist bill my insurance for the remaining balance?

What is the best way to do this?

You can absolutely try it. Have dad call and give insurance information to dental office. They can bill your insurance as the secondary, as I am assuming that is what it is since mom gave her insurance as primary. Billing 2 insurances is very common. Usually the secondary picks up the copay etc. that the primary leaves as pt. responsibility. And all of this is also assuming that the dental office will accept your insurance. Some dr/dentists dont participate with all insurance companies so dad will need to find out about that as well.

You should be able to. My husband and I have dual coverage. So if I go in, whatever is not covered under my insurance, his will pick it up.

I have a question. Why doesnt mom have an insurance card from the insurance that you are providing? It would make things a lot easier. She would then be able to present both primary and secondary insurance cards at the time of service instead a couple of months later.

The dentist will probably NOT agree to handle the double submittal (as it costs him to do so). You may have to submit a bill to one of the carriers on your own. Just be sure to let them know of the other insurance company and information (policy/group #, etc.). The two carriers will 'split the coverage' and each pay half (usually).

poeypooh - We gave copies of cards to her & DA but I'm not sure if she's kept them or not. We kept them from her for a while because they had my social # on it but as soon as they had another # (she's already opened accounts on anothers social) we made sure she had a copy.

She may make us do it just to make it hard.

Is she responsible for paying the balance or your husband? If you husband is then you could be correct, she may be doing that just to make things harder.
