Can I change the name of my wifes first child to mine?

Can I change the last name of my wife's first child to mine?I am the father to him in all sense accept for biological. Can we do this without going through the adoption process as I believe I have equitiable adopted him.

I live in Maryland and his mother has not known on his birth certificate. Is there anything we can do to change his name?

I don't understand your comment of "his Mother has not known on his birth certificate".

My mistake and what happens when you post a little too late at night after work. Basically the father section on my wife's first son birth certificate is blank - or not known.
