Can I cut trees down

I would like to know if I have the legal right to cut down any trees that are hanging over our property. We get no sun in our yard because of to many trees, which there for our house is always cold. We have to go outside to get warm.
If you could let me know the laws about cutting down trees I would appreciate it. Thank you
