I'll assume you are in the US to save us some time.

If you are married to the co-owner a divorce decree will address the ownership and possession of the car.

If you were foolish enough to co-own a car with somebody to whom you are not married you will have to buy his/her signature.

Suing won't get you anywhere.

If there is a loan on the vehicle you have even a bigger problem.

It was my fiance at the time. We have separated and I have a restraining order put in place. I have already paid off the loan and the car. He refuses to sign over the title and also refuses to update the registration as well. Is buying him out my only option even though I paid for the vehicle?

If he wants to keep the car or title, can't I sue for the bluebook value of the vehicle since I made the payments and I have the bank statements to prove it?

Or perhaps can the court help with mediating a reasonable agreement with the matter? A fair deal between the two?

Sue for what? He doesn't HAVE to just give you his ownership interest in the car.
