Even if you are an exempt employee, be wary of any place that has so much work, so poorly managed that they would ever ask you to take work home. In my extreme youth (first job type situation) I worked for an agency with a number of single young people, and we had such extreme case loads that many of the people ended up taking home the work so they could get it done. As a busy young mother who had lots to do outside work, I was not being competitive with those who were simply biting the bullet and working two or three unreimbursed hours at home at night. I was not keeping up my case loads. When this came up, and yes, I did discuss this with my boss, in a professional, not griping or whining way, it was pointed out to me that everyone else was able to do the work, why wasn't I, without extra work at home? And I made the others confess that they were all not able to get the work done without taking it home. Result, the workload was redistributed. My philosophy is that I don't donate my non-work time, don't plan to do a lot of work for anyone on non work hours. because if the work is such that they need to have you take it home, they need to hire more staff or re-think their work arrangements.
You may need to discuss this situation with your boss. You may also need to begin looking for another job in a place that pays you for all the work you're doing.
