My husband is having an Affair with a woman he met on the internet. She setup several 'secret' e-mail addresses for the both of them and has sent several e-mails accusing me of being a bad mother, throwing me in jail, threatening to go to my place of employment and slander my reputation, insinuated I was a lesbian, having an affair with my father in law, seducing my husband, etc.

There are other accusations as well. At one point Hotmail did close down one of her e-mail addresses because their review (based on my call to the abuse hot line @ hotmail) concluded that she indeed was abusive. The police claim that unless she has threatened to do bodily harm, the local police can not press charges.

My question is what are my options? I must inform you that I did send her several e-mails asking her to cease her association with my husband. I indicated that he was in need of medical help. Originally I thought I was dealing with someone who was being misled by my husband, but upon reading her vicious responses I can see that she herself may be the cause of making my husband's actions against his family worse.

I am presently working on a legal separation. My husband whose family has a history of schizophrenia, bi-polar disorders and other problems has not yet been fully diagnosed. He refuses to go for an evaluation.

There are other problems stemming from this affair. My current question is about her e-mails.

How do internet laws work? How are suits for libel on the internet work? I live in California.

Thank you for your assistance.

L.
