What is the name of your state? NY

I am behind in a lot of bills but rather than bankruptcy I am trying to pay them off and I would like to open a checking account to make it easier for me to send payments instead of getting money orders. Can the creditors take my bank accounts. There wouldn't be a lot of money in them just my weekly paycheck which would be paid out by the end of every month.

It would require a judgement against you before a bank account can be garnished. If you have not been sued and lost, no one can take your money. And whatever you do, do not authorize automatic withdrawls or pay by phone. Once creditors have this information, many will attempt to collect on any arrears by making withdrawls without your permission. I would continue to pay with money orders, it may be a hassle but finding unauthorized withdrawls is a much bigger hassle.
