Can you be charged with software piracy without possession?

Can you be charged with software piracy without possessing any or selling any copywrited material?

My former employer (who are being really mean) are spreading rumors around town that they let me go because of piracy (not true) and are saying they are gonna get federal charges levied against me.

If you USED any software without a properly acquired license then yes, they can.
