What is the name of your state? New York

I have attempted twice to obtain a library card at a local library. I was denied each time because the library is requesting two pieces of photo ID with current address. However, because I only recently moved into the area I only have a lease without a photo. I have all other forms of ID for a different address in NY. Is this legal?

Thank you.

write a formal letter to the head librarian explaining your circumstances.

Try to work with them before threatening a lawsuit.

Q: Is this legal?
A: Yes

Solution: Do as Xylene suggested, or obtain the necessary identification items.

thanks to helpful posters.

I'd prefer to sue to make some money if anyone is interested.

1. fairisfair: I'm not talking about NY CITY libraries which btw have several separate systems, but NY STATE. unless every county has their own requirements. its just outside of NYC.

2. Silverplum: hypothetical Q: other than the constraints of time, what would prevent you from acquiring proper citizenship paperwork for North Korea???

Never in my life had I needed TWO ID's w/ my address; not even to enter a foreign country -- degenerate bureaucratic absurdity.

stop by and say hello.

apparently, not as hard as getting to the library!!!

then use your passport for your second ID. How hard can THAT be?? LOL

sorry, everything that I found for Nassau county indicated the same requirements as the NY Public Library. ONE photo ID and a utility bill or rent receipt, copy of your lease, etc. etc etc.

fairisfair: where did u find that info? i can apply it rather usefully. :)

seriously. if anyone wants to make some money on this... I'll give a good deal. :D

google, mineola library card took me to the county of Nassau, listed the requirements and they were the same.

You can also pay for one in the event that you are not a resident. I didn't get into that.

Making money from a library card? now how might that be done??

Don't even tell me you are suggesting suing the library for not giving you a card?

Except that they're not denying you a card because of your class (which isn't illegal anyway - there's no such thing as class discrimination) or your national origin. They're denying you the card because you're too friggin' lazy to obtain the necessary requirements.

The fact that you have admitted on a public site that your intent is to sue them to make money, will serve their defense well in the unlikely event that such a claim ever comes to trial. Their attorney will thank you.

Oh, and don't bother deleting; I've saved a copy of the entire thread.
