Hi-
This past weekend I was pulled over. I was told that my car was unregistered and would be impounded. In MA cars are automatically renewed by the registry (unless you have outstanding tickets or excise tax). I was told by the officer that I owed money, but she couldn't tell me how much or to whom. She called a tow truck and back up police. So there I stood on a busy street with 3 police cars -lights flashing the whole nine yards for 40 minutes. My car was taken and I was left to hoof it up the road to a pay phone to call a friend for a ride.
The following Monday I went to the registry and then to the town hall- to make a long story short there was a computer error. The registry showed I owed excise tax. The town showed the amount was paid (from 1997).
My questions-
who reimburses me for the tow? What about the loss wages to clear up the whole mess? I still have to go to the magistrate about the $100 ticket. More time from work. Whenever I ask the registry, the town and the police, they all shrug their shoulders at me.....

My response:

You have to file a Governmental Claim against the Township and / or your State's Department of Motor Vehicles. You don't have much time, so see an attorney for details.
