What is the name of your state (only U.S. law)? wa
a creditor called my work today and gave them a case number. i have looked up this number and cannot find it anywhere. does that mean they are lying, or am i just not looking in the right place? why would they call work and tell them a case number, is that ok for them to do?

There is no way for me to know if you are looking in the right place.

As to whether what the did was ok or not:
Was this an original creditor or a collection agency or debt purchaser ?

I'll bet that "case number" is their own internal reference, NOT an actual court case number.

Have you already been sued? Is there an existing judgment against you by the original creditor who this CA alleges they represent?

Certainly no law was broken if they just left a message that was like "Please ask Mr. Dunkle to call 1-800-546-3456 and reference case number 43567819".

Instead of worrying about what message they left for you, I suggest you contact them and work out a payment plan if you really do owe the debt.

You have to know exactly what court the case was filed in and not all courts show upcoming actions online. Also, you will be served before a lawsuit is actually given a case number, if you haven't been served, there is no court case.

but the fact it was specified it was a creditor does make it unlawful. That is a violation of the FDCPA.

How do you know whoever called her work said it was a creditor? I suspect the OP knows exactly who was trying to reach him and what the matter involved.

well, since the OP said it was a creditor and the OP has not said anything about contacting whomever called, that would lead to the logical conclusion that whomever called stated they were a creditor.

of course it could be mere speculation on the op's part but op appeared to be quite confident it was a creditor

If you are concerned about your privacy then I suggest you take care of the debt before getting sued and having a garnishment served on your employer. Those things would be a matter of public record.
