What is the name of your state (only U.S. law)? CA

Back in November of 2011, started my second year with my current employer. At the time, I had requested the necessary documents so that I could have CFRA leave for my ill partner. I asked all throughout 2011 and 2012 to no avail. They said someone would check on the necessary paperwork and get back to me. I inquired several times and met the same response. Of course I kept getting written up when I had to take intermittent leave because there was no CFRA and I had no clue what to do?

In Jan of 2013 my employer was bought out and they have Liberty Mutual handling this now. We can take advantage of this once we can afford the fees to register as domestic partners in CA, but for us it's costly since I make very little, and my partner is on permanent disability due to renal failure, and issues with diabetes and heart. Is there anything I needed (or still need) to do in the form of a complaint about this? I am guessing at this point it's moot because we are under new ownership... but I've taken quite a bit of hits on attendance.

Well you weren't fired so I'm not seeing what sort of job protection you might be looking for. What are you hoping to accomplish? You don't work for them anymore.

Well I am not sure. I do still work for them. The other part not mentioned is that after a while of asking for the paperwork, they came back with saying "we are dedicated to working with you through this issue and will help when we can..." They didn't write me up for a while on them after saying that, but then came back later and re-instated the call outs that they didn't write up and wrote them up, and then of course I had to sign my disciplinary actions. One of the things I had begged is that I be allowed to work from home as others have. My reasons were that by being home I may be able to avoid calling out and be able to keep an eye on my domestic partner. Also, they are on immune suppression drugs due to organ transplants, and twice I have brought home colds from my office that have resulted in hospitalization for my partner. Without much of an immune system, they become serious. But after requesting to work from home, that's when the excused absences became write ups and I didn't qualify to work from home....

This is why I wanted CFRA. My last employer gave us CFRA without a question beyond the required physician's submitted paperwork. Alas, it is what it is I guess. At least it didn't cost me my raise, but it cost me something that would have been more important.

It costs $33 to register as a domestic partner. That's a lot cheaper than being fired and not having any income at all. If you've been going through this since 2011, I'm quite sure you've had the money to fill out a piece of paper and stick it in the mail unless you really want us to believe that you have been unable to save $16.50/yr.

If you have not registered as domestic partners, what makes you think you're eligible for protected time off?
