The mother of my first son and I were not married when he was born, so she gave him her last name. Now that we are both happily married to other people and have another child each...we have agreed to change his last name to mine. How do I go about doing this? Who do I need to contact and what would the cost be if any?

Thank you-

My response:

You need to contact a Family Law attorney who can file the proper Petition and have the same published in a newspaper of general circulation. The cost will be around $1,500 to $2,000.00.

Or . . . you can go to one of those large bookstores and, in their "legal" section, perhaps they'll have a step-by-step "How To" book on the subject.
