What is the name of your state (only U.S. law)? USA

Good morning,

Attn. Child Pornographers: Don't Leave Your Filthy Flash Drive at the Library - St. Louis News - Daily RFT

If you are so inclined to read the above article, it tells of a man that left his USB drive at a library, went back to retrieve it, and was arrested for having child porn on it. After describing the physical properties of the drive to librarians, they located it in the lost and found bin. They proceeded to plug it in to verify it was his. Of course, this led to his demise.

The question posed is: did the library overstep their rights in searching his private property? Surely if they did, this would lead evidence collected by police to be fruit from the poison tree. If they did not, are there circumstances where this may happen, say if the data was on a cell phone? Are electronic data storage devices and extension of your home?

Let me know your thoughts.

It is physically impossible for me to NOT quote this:

..... it tells of a man that left his USB drive at a library, went back to retrieve it, and was arrested for having child porn on it. After describing the physical properties of the drive to librarians, they located it in the lost and found bin. They proceeded to plug it in to verify it was his. Of course, this led to his demise.

And I was having such a rough night....
