I was stopped two days ago, in Texas, by a DPS tropper. I was stopped for speeding 73 in a 70, and was issued a warning. When he was through writting the warning, I asked him about the legality of my tail lenses, because they are clear. He asked me if I had read, and orange buls. I told him I did, and he said it was fine, as long as I didn't have clear light bulbs shining from the rear of the vehicle. I asked flat out, are they illegal, and he replied with "not like you have them, the have red and orange bulbs, they would be if they were clear bulbs."
So I walked with a warning. Yesterday, another trooper pulled me over. He asked me to step out of the vehicle. When I got out he was starring at my lights smiling. I asked him if he was pulling me over for my lights and he said yes. When I explained to him what the other trooper said, he responded with "..some troopers don't keep up with that stuff".....then he said "I won't write you a ticket for them, but I am going to write a ticket for not wearing a seatbelt. The odd thing was, I had it on! I want to fight this ticket, first, because ALL troopers should know their laws they are enforcing, and second, I had my belt on! Do I have a strong case?

No, it will be your word against his -- but change the lights and don't try to make it a matter of principle.

The DPS has a web page dedicated to the tail light issue. I read it recently and will post the URL if I can find it.

Basically it states that they are illegal because they do not contain red reflectors.

I have seen some of these taillights with little red reflectorsmade in them. I do not know if tese reflectors are large enough to be acceptable.
