What is the name of your state (only U.S. law)? California

A couple of months ago my son was riding his bike in the neighborhood with his friends and fell. A local policeman saw the accident and immediately called for an ambulance. My son was taken to the emergency room and we were called by the hospital. He even told the policeman he felt fine and would walk home. Fortunately, he was OK, and had a mildly sprained wrist.

A couple of weeks later we got a bill from the ambulance company for $1,700.00. I do not want to pay it since we never authorized an ambulance ride. The ambulance company is threatening to turn the debt over to collection, and possibly sue us.

We only live a block away from where he fell and if contacted we could have taken care of it ourselves. We probably would not have taken him to the ER, but we are OK with that.

I really feel someone should tried to have contact us before calling an ambulance and sending him to the emergency room. Now we are stuck with an outrageous bill and threats from the company.

Am I wrong in disputing this charge? What can I do to prevent this from escalating? What is the name of your state (only U.S. law)?

Yes, you are wrong.

Be glad someone cared enough about your kid to call an ambulance. Send the bill to your insurance company and write a check for the balance.

And try not to hit the roof when the rest of the bills come rolling in.
